Million Dollar Equation

An intriguing puzzle that will keep you awake at night

Beal Prize 

This unsolved mystery is one of those problems that are easy to understand but incredibly hard to solve.

In fact, it is so hard that D. Andrew Beal, a prominent banker who is also a mathematics enthusiast, has funded a prize of a million dollars for a correct solution to the problem.

In mathematics, there are many problems that are so important that they come with a money prize.

The most well-known such problems are the 7 Millenium problems which include famous problems like The Riemann Hypothesis and P vs NP.

However, there are other problems out there with prices on their heads. The problem referred to at the top is called the Beal Conjecture and that problem is the focus of this article.

Coprime integers

Two integers n and m are said to be coprime or relatively prime if their greatest common divisor is 1.

That is, they have no prime factors in common.

A pair (n, m) of coprime integers is called a coprime pair.

It is clear that all pairs of (non-equal) prime numbers are coprime pairs but so is (9, 4) for example because no prime number divides both of them.

Recall that a prime number is any positive integer greater than 1 such that 1 is the only positive divisor.

The Conjecture

The Beal Conjecture states the following:

Let



where A, B, C, x, y and z are natural numbers (positive integers).

If x, y and z are all greater than 2, then A, B and C have a common prime factor.

That’s it!

An example equation is the following:

3³ + 6³ = 3⁵.

Note that in this equation, all the three terms have the prime 3 as a factor since 3 divides 3, 6 and 3 respectively.

The Beal Conjecture says that this is always the case.

A nice way to understand any problem of the form “if P then Q" is to consider equivalent formulations such as the contrapositive representation of the statement.

The contrapositive statement has the same truth value as the original statement so a proof of the contrapositive would prove the original statement immediately (and vice versa).

The contrapositive statement of the Beal conjecture states the following:

Let equation (1) hold and let A, B, C, x, y and z be natural numbers (positive integers).

If A, B and C are pairwise coprime (that is they don’t share a prime factor) then either x, y or z must be 1 or 2.

We can use the contrapositive Beal Conjecture to form an equation that forces the equation to be true with A, B and C coprime, as well as x, y z greater than 2.

The conjecture then states that this equation has no natural number solutions.

First, we need Bézout’s identity:

Let a and b be integers with greatest common divisor d. Then there exist integers x and y such that ax + by = d.

We will use a more specialized version of Bézout’s identity restricting it to coprime integers.

We could say that a corollary to Bézout’s identity is the following:

Let a and b be coprime natural numbers. Then there exist integers n and m such that na + mb = 1.

Note that the converse is also true since if there exist integers n and m such that na + mb = 1, and a and b are not coprime, then they have a common prime factor p which is greater than 1 by definition of the prime numbers.

This implies that p divides 1 which is clearly a contradiction. Thus a and b are coprime.

We can now state the following:

Let a and b be natural numbers. a and b are coprime if and only if there exist integers n and m such that na + mb = 1.

Note that if we know that the Beal equation (1) holds, then the statement “A, B and C does not share a common prime factor" is equivalent to the statement A and B are coprime.

This is because if A and B have a common prime factor p, then we can factor that out from the left-hand side of (1). This shows (by dividing through by p)that C^z has p as a prime factor as well (i.e. p divides it). But then it must divide C too.

So if A and B have a common factor, then all of them have that factor.

The contrapositive of this is:

If A, B and C do not share a common factor and equation (1) holds, then A and B are coprime.

We can now combine two equations ensuring that they both hold by squaring:



 

 

If any solution exists for this equation for natural numbers x, y, z, A, B, C and integers n and m, then at least one of x, y or z is either 1 or 2.

If you can prove this, then you’ll get a million dollars.

The Connection to Fermat’s Last Theorem

Well, as with everything in this world, there is no easy way of getting a million dollars.

First of all, the proof needs to be published in a peer-reviewed magazine recognized by AMS.

Secondly, there is a reason why this conjecture is so hard to prove.

It turns out that the Beal conjecture is a generalization of Fermat’s Last Theorem (FLT).

FLT states that there are no natural number solutions to the equation



for n ≥ 3.

Fermat’s Last Theorem took mathematicians 350 years to prove and the proof was long, complicated and relied on modern specialized mathematics. In fact, the proof is so complicated that it can only be understood by a handful of people on this planet.

The Beal Conjecture is, in every sense of the definition of the word, harder than FLT!!!

So unless you find a proof by a completely different approach that has been overlooked for 350 years by the best mathematicians in the world, a proof of the Beal Conjecture seems out of reach to say the least.

To see that BC is a generalization of FLT we need to show that BC => FLT.

That is if the Beal Conjecture is true then Fermat’s Last Theorem is true.

Of course, we know that FLT is true because of the above-mentioned proof by Andrew Wiles via the Modularity Theorem which can be seen informally as a bridge or dictionary between the world of elliptic curves and the world of modular forms.

An astounding achievement indeed!

However, we want to prove that even if we didn’t know about Andrew’s proof, the Beal Conjecture would still imply Fermat’s Last Theorem.

To see this assume that the BC is true and that a Fermat equation like the one above holds for natural numbers a, b, c and some natural number exponent n with n ≥ 3.

Then by BC, we know that a, b and c have a common factor p. We can now divide through by p^n to obtain yet another solution to FLT.

By continuing dividing through by common primes to the nth power, we will eventually get a solution with a and b coprime.

This contradicts the assumption of the Beal Conjecture, thus there can be no such solution for n ≥ 3 i.e. Fermat’s Last Theorem.

The Beal Conjecture is a fascinating mystery of numbers. Like Fermat’s Last Theorem it appeals to us because of its simple looks, but as we now know, looks can be deceiving

If your an individual investor there really is no need to invest other than for preferred stocks and M&A to get a equity distribution for your owners equity books and preferred funds for a lot of shares. Preferred Stocks of equity equal to cash equivalents  And preferred funds have a higher initial investment of $1K But no voting rights. Preferred not common.  Or a pension for shareholders and you should have your trial balance for your investment firm to look at and put in a capital account for you to invest. With your balance sheet. You can trade on margin but that's a loan. If house republicans approve congress for more cash. the bottom line is more cash more chances of ending up in assisted living.Which is not considered normal. Invest. When they decided about the sustainability of the nation. If a parent dies you are eligible for social security child benefits. Like my mom died when I was 18. Working capital is the same as net worth. You may also want to buy a grant writing book for corporate grants of merchandise and or Mathew Lesko's books. When forming a startup you need your articles of incorporation. A ticker symbol in the articles would be nice. 3 financial statements your income statement, your cash flow statement and your balance sheet. You can pay off debt through amortization maybe if you own a patent. Your investment firm may let you upload your balance sheet like mine but my father wont let me right now. I have about 700K in equity. I support Twitter's Bootstrap for Dreamweaver and own Twitter shares I'm waiting for twitter to merge with Adobe or Bootstrap given to the Apache foundation. Currently I'm a member of Epic Games on Github which has a over $3 billion valuation.

Windows Image Configuration Editor

In Windows Embedded ending in 2009 with Windows Embedded 2009 Target and Component designer. if you have 2003, and XP source you can roundtrip engineer in the source and build SDL or 'Mantis' files for your Target Designer and import them. To create repositories and engineer Windows  a 'embedded' engineering system. Below is 8.1 which isn't as good. 2009 and earlier is good if you have the source code (for 2003 its XP Embedded) and know how to build SDL files. The hardware platforms are small but I'm sure Intel has the build support packages for ATX and other desktop form factors If you apply. I am protesting Windows 10 and 11 to congress as a INTJ.

The Art of Computer Programming

I remember reading "The Art of Computer Programming" when I was 20. I bought volumes 1-3 most recently 4. I learned the math at one time, but now I'm using Computer algebra systems like Maxima. I still like to read TAOCP and read the answers in the back of the book and figure them out from time to time. They are just the classic algorithms.

My C# teacher and Typescript

In 02000 I began to learn C# from the earliest beta's from the MSDN magazine and newspaper. I might still have some. I began reading Anders Hejlsberg's book: "The C# Programming Language" I've forgotten a lot but brush up on it regularly. I might learn TypeScript not sure yet. Here is an introduction to TypeScript on Channel 9. I have gone back and downloaded the source and binaries of some Pascal compilers.

GNUCash

Recently I built GNUCash from source on FreeBSD and also downloaded it for Mac and Windows. To enable AqBanking which is German or online banking you do have to build it from source for BSD. After entering in my net worth or equity into the opening balance you are able to move money around in GNUCash like to checking or savings. And generate a cashflow statement saying that the equity was money in. The only problem is that if you want to "issue a transaction" online in GNUCash you do have to use HBCI or home banking which is only available in Germany. And can't be opened up online. When I emailed the central bank in Germany and asked if I could you my source code as a reserve. The response I got was that they didn't do any consulting over the internet or email. They just said to bring my passport. I did email President Obama and ask for HBCI in the U.S. I haven't heard back. Another way in the U.S. at least is to use intellectual property as collateral and just give the bank a copy until you update it. They can keep it. I called the DB main office in New York. And they only handle investment accounts. It is only Germany that has Home Banking Computer Interface. or HBCI The U.S uses OFX which you can only download transactions. And make institution to institution transactions. And why should I call it fixed? Doesn't anyone know the ~1960 definition of money and cash? 

UPDATE 

After further investigation you could thoracically have a capital account at the IMF ('So Cruel' IMF set adrift and at peace)or go public with a liquidity event like an IPO or other event like a Trust or use an bankers acceptance. It's still that bad word 'loan' Define capital in the oxford English dictionary.  The IP or code is valued with COCOMO II and Slim and can be called capital or intangibles and there are real estate accounting laws on intangibles. I filed out my first Microsoft Partner million dollar 1065 in 2011 got in trouble with my family just not the IRS. it was just intangibles and could be used for a home.  It's capital that pays salaries. I have 2016 Enterprise and 2020 Developer. I remember it was just freeware in the 80's you can still find HP's FTP site and thats where you should begin with Microsoft. in college. I need to invest in an Alpha HP OpenVMS Integrity server but don't know if my apt can take it.


It is just Cobol HP and Microsoft. I'm a IBM academic partner too. and I have AIX I sold most of my UVa books and bought MIT Press and Princeton Press .I emailed MIT and am using MIT's mit-pdos on github and Keybase. just like the original .NET. I have Windows NT 4.0 and Server 2003 Source from 2003 college from Prof Division at UVa. and all of my Microsoft SDK's on my build drive I'm almost done. I'm embarrassed of Alex Pluck and msys2 I have NT 3.5 -10 SDK's and Source in place and I put 1.0- 3.1 in Apple with all of there SDK's I'm not buying Microsoft 365 until it's native and a real enterprise MSDN type Subscription. I'm not building in the cloud I don't have trouble out of my build drive I have a 8 TB build drive that uses Bitlocker. I'm on Visual Studio 2015 with 2017 and 2019 Build Tools an CE 2013 I need my 2020 update and I use TFS 2015 with a build and Symbol Drop. I don't like Azure Devops. They deprecated the XAML build Definitions. Microsoft I made a video of me on You Tube building my Windows 2003 Server did you have to take it down?. I have one scoop of nesquik left It'is your Redistributed OSS Microsoft but I'm making fun.or your Git For Windows 2.11  I can't get coreutils to compile with Cygwin with mingw host like it should.
